Do Energy Communities Really Understand Blockchain? How COMMUNITAS Finds Out

Blockchain and energy communities illustration

In a previous article on the COMMUNITAS website, we explained what blockchain is and why it is used in energy communities.
We introduced concepts such as decentralised ledgers, peer-to-peer energy trading, and digital trust without intermediaries.

The next and equally important question is different: do users actually understand how blockchain works when they interact with energy services?
This question matters because digital energy solutions only work if people trust them, understand them, and feel confident using them.
Technology alone is not enough.

Why user understanding matters in the energy transition

Blockchain is often described as a background technology. Users do not need to know how blocks are chained or how cryptography works.
However, they do need to understand what the system does for them.

If people do not understand why transactions are transparent, why energy tokens appear in their account, or why trading rules cannot be changed overnight, trust can quickly disappear. In energy communities, trust is essential.
Members are not just consumers. They are active participants who share resources, benefits, and responsibilities.

This is why COMMUNITAS looks beyond technical performance and focuses on how people perceive and understand blockchain-based energy services.

From explanation to experience: how COMMUNITAS approaches users

Learning through experience concept

Instead of asking users to learn blockchain theory, COMMUNITAS focuses on learning through use.
The project develops digital tools where blockchain operates in the background, while interfaces remain simple and intuitive.

Users interact with familiar elements such as dashboards, consumption graphs, and trading options.
Blockchain ensures that data is reliable, transactions are transparent, and rules are applied fairly, but without forcing users to deal with complex technical concepts.

Over time, users start to recognise patterns: transactions are traceable, data cannot be manipulated, and community rules are enforced automatically.
Blockchain becomes meaningful through everyday interaction.

Testing understanding in real energy communities

User testing and workshops in energy communities

COMMUNITAS does not assume that understanding happens automatically.
The project actively checks how users interpret and make sense of blockchain-based solutions.

Through participatory activities, workshops, and user feedback sessions,
researchers observe where users feel confident and where confusion appears.
Do people understand why prices change?
Do they trust automated settlements?
Do they feel in control of their energy decisions?

These insights help improve communication, refine interfaces, and adapt explanations to real user needs.
This work is supported by social research expertise from ASM Research Solutions Strategy, which analyses user behaviour, expectations, and acceptance of digital energy tools.

What this means for the future of energy communities

The energy transition is not only about renewable technologies.
It is also about digital literacy, trust, and empowerment.
Blockchain can support fair and transparent energy markets, but only if people feel comfortable using them.

COMMUNITAS shows that understanding does not require technical knowledge.
It requires clear design, real-life testing, and continuous dialogue with users.
By focusing on people as much as on technology, blockchain becomes a practical tool rather than an abstract concept.
