COMMUNITAS Core Platform – the digital backbone of future energy communities

At the heart of the COMMUNITAS project lies the

COMMUNITAS Core Platform

— a comprehensive digital environment designed to bring together all tools, data, and stakeholders involved in the creation and management of energy communities.

During the latest General Assembly in Cascais, partners had the opportunity to test the platform’s newest version and explore its rapidly growing functionalities. This meeting marked an important step toward transforming the platform from a prototype into a stable, user-ready ecosystem connecting pilots and tools across Europe.

A single entry point for all COMMUNITAS tools

The COMMUNITAS Core Platform is built as an open, modular space that serves as a digital backbone for energy communities. It connects data collected from pilot sites, analytical tools developed by technical partners, and user interfaces created for citizens, policymakers, and energy managers.

Led by Energy@Work and jointly developed by RINA, CERTH, and EDP NEW, the platform is now fully deployed and accessible online. It gathers and processes information from pilot sites located in Spain, Italy, and Denmark, turning raw sensor data into meaningful insights about energy use, renewable generation, and flexibility management.

Connecting people, data, and decisions

COMMUNITAS partners testing the platform

One of the main achievements presented during the Cascais meeting was the launch of the first public version of the COMMUNITAS Core Platform, complete with its own Data Insights and Analytics dashboard. This feature enables users to monitor the performance of energy communities, explore trends, and understand how local generation, consumption, and flexibility interact within the system.

To make integration smoother, partners agreed on a hybrid connection strategy:

  • Simpler tools are embedded directly within the platform via secure frames,
  • Interactive applications open through encrypted redirections,
  • New modules are integrated natively within the dashboard code.

This flexible approach allows every component of COMMUNITAS — from planning and investment tools to blockchain-based energy trading modules — to coexist within a single environment while maintaining independence and technical integrity.

The platform already connects with several project tools developed in Work Package 3, including the Guarantees of Origin platform, the P2P Energy Market, and the Demand Response and NILM tool. Each integration is supported by a dedicated API, enabling continuous exchange of information between pilots, tools, and the central database.

Security and collaboration by design

Another key milestone achieved by the partners was the definition of a unified single sign-on mechanism. Based on Microsoft Azure’s B2C authentication framework, it will soon allow users to access all COMMUNITAS tools securely through a single login, while ensuring full data protection and user privacy.

In parallel, the team has introduced a common DevOps environment, led by CERTH, which coordinates how software updates are built, documented, and deployed. All developers contribute to a shared GitHub repository, where each change is tracked using version control, changelogs, and architectural decision records.

Looking ahead

As the platform continues to grow, its next major release will introduce personalised dashboards — allowing users to choose which data, widgets, and analytics they want to see first. This will make the COMMUNITAS Core Platform not just a project outcome, but a tool that communities can use and adapt to their own needs in real-world settings.
